In part 1 of the Rule, we outlined the context for success. However, in part 2 we’re going deeper by focusing on your social skills as a catalyst for personal achievement.
This is a vital step because when it comes to growth, far too many people are hamstrung by social inadequacy.
People want the “good life”, but usually lack the emotional and social development necessary for success.
They misguidedly believe doing what everyone else does, being a die-hard conformist (e.g. getting an education, a job, and finding a like-minded significant other), are the keys the secret code to living the American Dream.
But if everyone is taking this approach, why isn’t everyone successful?
Clearly, it’s time for some eye-opening truth.
“Circumstances” and “things” will not give you the deep understanding that comes from [self-acceptance.
And this is where your ability to interact effectively with others begins.
Far more significant than a college degree and the “look” of a go-getter, is your ability to comprehend reality and apply impeccable interpersonal skills.
If there is a secret to success, it’s the fact that getting along with people is a must.
The application of your social expertise breaks down as follows:
These categories, while appearing pedestrian, are developed and manifested only in proportion to your self-control.
I don’t mean the clinched fist kind of control that might feel good but gets marginal results.
No, I’m talking about awareness, having a clear understanding of reality, and looking at yourself honestly.
Further control has nothing to do with others. Like everything else of substance, it starts at home. If you can’t control yourself, you certainly cannot influence others.
Ultimately, you must move past the “words” on the above chart. These are simply points of reference, not feelings. Only you can bring the emotional “heat,” coupled with intuition and social skills, that fuel ambition and create success.
In short, it’s your responsibility to master all the criteria listed above.
This is the elusive “big step” forward you’ve been seeking, and the key to getting everything you want in life.
Later,
Gary
