A Lot of Options, A Lot of Nothing
It’s easy to get sucked into the “I can have it all” mindset.
For instance, maybe you have diverse interests coupled with a burning desire to realize your multifaceted potential. So your hands are in everything, and you go hard.
But what are you actually gaining?
Erroneously, many of us were raised to believe in our specialness and that we had endless choices. With no practical understanding, we bounced from one career option to another with entitlement and a know-it-all attitude. Distressingly, some of us have remained locked into this mindset believing we are exercising prerogatives when actually we’re dilettantes.
Spurred on by permissive caregivers, teachers, and slogans of pseudo empowerment, we move with impunity from one job to the next if things aren’t to our liking, never really solidifying our position by staying in a role long enough to produce substantive results. Needless to say, this is our reactionary approach to challenges in every area of our lives.
The truth is, we all have talents but only one or two with career potential, leaving other interests as hobbies, though no less serious. Still, you must select one. (It should be obvious to you by now that successful people find one thing they enjoy and become experts at it.)
Recognizing and honing our talents is imperative for earning a living and connecting with the deep satisfaction that comes from doing meaningful work. “Finding yourself” by trying out several occupations is normal when you’re entering adulthood. But at some point (soon) discipline should hold sway and perseverance should take the reins.
When you find something you like and are good at, stay with it. Over time, you will discover all that you desire by mastering your craft. Your efforts and sense of accomplishment will be solid and your confidence unshakeable. Then you can take your acute sense of discipline and apply it to other aspects of your life.
If you’re lackadaisical, stop living in suspended animation, waiting for inspiration to strike. Get busy now. Believe in your talents and master them. This is what living a meaningful life is all about.
Later,
Gary
